Young Love www.slipnotdesigs.wordpress.com

I love hanging out with newlyweds.  They are so cute and in love.  I think that people who have been married a while tend to dismiss that desire to serve each other, forgive each other, and be intentional about having a good marriage.  They adapt the attitude of “Oh, just wait!  Once you experience the real world of marriage, you won’t be like this!”  That cynicism and jaded response seems justified.  It is absolutely true that the cute couple in early wedded bliss has no way of knowing what is ahead.  They haven’t seen the worst of their spouse yet.  They haven’t been hurt by the one who is supposed to love them the most.  They haven’t been exhausted with young babies, or in the throes of foreclosure on their home.  They haven’t experienced the stress of a move or job loss or infertility.

In 2013, my goal was to change over as much of my household and personal care items as possible to natural alternatives.  I didn’t want to buy the expensive ones that still use tons of packaging and cramp my budget!  I mean low cost alternatives from things I already have around my house.  While I made a lot of changes, the one thing I just couldn’t get used to was not having the disposable wipes for the bathrooms and kitchen.  I really tried the spray with reusable rags, but it just annoys me for some reason.  So, I kept buying the Clorox Green Works ones because they were a more natural alternative.  But one day I sat down and went to work to find a reusable option and I found a great one!!!

Gather your supplies:

about 10 rags (I cut mine from t-shirts that were too stained to donate)

white vinegar

hot water

essential oil

container

I grabbed a disinfecting wipes container and added about 10 rags

I love to give simple gifts from the heart.  These pedestal plates have been all over Pinterest, but because you’re using something different every time, they look new and unique each time!  They are so simple to make, but you just need to plan ahead because they take a little time to set up.  These three above were given as teacher gifts last year, topped with yummy pastries.  This one below was dropped off to a friend on her birthday.

I love this recipe.  I found it years ago when someone shared it on Facebook, and no matter how hard I try, I can’t find the original location to give credit!  One of the things I love about this recipe is that it contains 6 bananas.  That’s a ton!  I don’t know about you, but when I have extra bananas, I have quite a few and my regular banana bread only takes 1!  So this is a great solution for the over ripe banana problem.  Second thing I love about it is that it holds up beautifully to substitutions.  I have a Vitamix dry container and use it to grind local wheat and spelt for flour.  But when I do that, some things just turn out really dense and wheaty.  In this recipe, I cannot tell that I used wheat flour, or raw sugar, or greek yogurt instead of sour cream.  It’s just amazing and decadent every time!  So without further ado, here is your next party pleaser.  Make sure you bring copies of the recipe with you when you take it somewhere because people will be asking! ***My blog now resides at www.allthelittlereasons.com Please join me there to see all of the posts from this blog, as well as my new ideas, tutorials, recipes and musings!***New York Wrap - www.slipnotdesigns.wordpress.comI promised some corned beef leftover recipes when I posted about the corned beef that’s perfect every time.   But then I left on vacation and this languished in my iPhone camera until now.  So if you’re like me and you threw your corned beef leftovers in the freezer, try this!  I used to work at an Irish Pub and this was one of my favorite things to order.  They called it a New York wrap, and it’s essentially cold corned beef, swiss cheese, cole slaw and 1,000 Island wrapped up in a large wrap.  I like my 1,00 Island separate to dip it in.  If you’re in the mood for the taste of St. Patrick’s Day a couple weeks later, here’s your meal! Ruben salad www.slipnotdesigns.wordpress.com

Remember the post on how to make corned beef that’s perfect every time?  I promised you at the end of that one to show you how to make Ruben Salad.  I was messing around with leftovers and realized this was a wonderful, lower carb option!  Plus, it travels better than a Ruben!  I began by making croutons out of the leftover Rye bread that we had used for rubens. Freeze on Screen Time

Have you parents ever realized that a situation has gotten out of hand with your kids and desperately needs to be reigned in?  That’s what has happened with us over the last few months with screen time – TV, iPod, iPad, computer time, iPhone games…  You name it, we’ve been doing it.  I could blame it on the weather.  Terrible NE Ohio temperatures this year and all that.  But as I’ve reflected on it, I’ve realized it’s two things.

1.  First, Lazy Mommy Syndrome.  After I’ve spent all morning and early afternoon teaching, I need to get things done!  So games/shows seem like an easy option.  It certainly seems quicker for me than helping them to decide what cool fun thing they can do that’s creative.

2.  The second part that I’m realizing played into this dilemma was that I had not previously set rules.  We have guidelines in other media areas:

– No TV on school mornings

– No DVDs in the car unless we are driving over 45min Continue reading

Corned Beef www.slipnotdesigns.wordpress.comI love corned beef, but I can’t stand how salty and fatty it can be.  By cooking it myself, I’m able to control both of those things!  I found this method a few years ago, and I’ve never looked back!  It seems a bit redundant to both boil and bake, but it takes care of the saltiness and yet has the yummy baked taste, rather than just that boiled taste.  I know it seems like a lot of work, but each time you bring it to a boil, it only takes 10-15 minutes, so you can do it while you clean up something else.  Try it!  I think you’ll agree that it’s worth the extra step! Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies www.slipnotdesigns.wordpress.com

My friends have the best recipes!  This one was passed to me a few years ago and it is very well worn!  It’s a chocolate cookie with chocolate chips – or peanut butter chips.  Completely delicious!  They also work well straight from the freezer.  In these pictures, I show how to put them on a tray to freeze.  Then just throw the frozen balls in a zip top bag in the freezer and you’re ready to put a handful in the oven when you have company unexpectedly stop by!  You may need to add a minute or two to the cooking time, but I haven’t noticed a significant difference.

Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies www.slipnotdesigns.wordpress.comI also find that when I deliver a meal to a friend who is sick or had a baby or just returned home from a funeral, I can bring them this way.  The dough is wrapped in parchment paper and tied with a  ribbon.  I write the cooking instructions in permanent marker on the cookie cylinder.  Then all they need to to is spend 10 minutes cooking them for fresh baked dessert deliciousness!
